The Darke County Friends of the Shelter is a Non-Profit Organization made up of various community members of Darke County. Our goal is to help with the special needs of the Darke County Animal Shelter and to give every four-legged citizen another chance!
The Friends of the Shelter provides a leash for every adopted dog that leaves the shelter. We also provide educational materials for both dogs and cats that can be picked up at the County Animal Shelter.
The organization is currently applying for grants to implement a low-cost spay/neuter program and to purchase new cat cages for the animal shelter. The Friends of the Shelter also is planning to create a website that will show all available animals looking for a good home and to purchase software to track lost and found cats and dogs.
If you're interested in becoming a member of the Darke County Friends of the Shelter, please call the shelter director, Duane Sanning at 547-1645. Many hands make light work! The shelter is always in need of able-bodied persons willing to volunteer their time. Meetings for the Friends of the Shelter are held at 7:00 p.m. the third Monday of every month at the Darke County Animal Shelter, 5066 County Home Rd; Greenville.
In 2004, Volunteers donated over 1,000 hours!!!

Dear God,
I don't know why I'm homeless and no one cares for me. I've tried to be a good little pup, as good as any dog can be. I had a home for a little while, but one day I heard them say: "We can't keep this female dog around', so they took me away. They left me on a lonely road, no shelter, and no food for a pup. I waited each day for their return, but now I've given up. There's only one that knows I'm here, knows my awful plight, She lives beneath a pile of wood, so small, so scared, so thin. To abandon a kitten so small and frail seams a terrible sin. Help us, dear God, this kitten and me, so hungry and so alone. Guide some kind soul to find us and give us a home, sweet home.
